Embedding a PowerPoint Presentation

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Presentation slides are handy things for students, in fact for anyone, to have after a lecture or talk is long over. PowerPoint documents, especially, can contain useful information that’s valuable to look back on. In many way’s they’re great, but they also have some failings. For example, unless you’ve posted the whole file on the web, or emailed it to someone, it’s stopped being very useful for anyone but the creator. Some students busily take copious notes to ensure that they capture all of the content in PowerPoint slides, but then fail to participate in class discussion (how could they when their pens are furiously trying to copy down slides). Emailing, or posting, the whole file can be just as frustrating. There are few things as maddening as finding the resource you need only to discover that you can’t open it because your on a Mac, or it was made with PowerPoint 2008, and all you have is 2003, and and and, or or or. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to deliver the same presentation to anyone who happened to have an internet connection? Well, in fact you can! By uploading a PowerPoint file to Google Docs, and converting it into a Google Presentation (something Google will do automatically for you), you can seamlessly share or embed your presentations nearly anywhere on the web. Interested? Check out this example. Learn how to do this yourself by following along with the how-to below.

Step 1

head over to:

http://docs.google.com

and sign in to Google – you can do this with your gmail account, or you can create an account that’s based off of your keene.edu account

Step 2

Click “Upload”

Step 3

Select the Powerpoint presentation you want, and check the box that says, “Convert documents…”

Step 4

Click “Start Upload”

When you’re doing uploading your document you should see the name of your file underlined in (blue like a web link), click on the link and it will open in a new window or tab.

Click on “Share”

You’ll see a drop down menu with a few options

Click on the last item in the list called “Publish/embed”

Step 5

You’ll see a whole chunk of code in a box that will pop up on your screen. Copy this code and paste it into the HTML of any website (you can do this in Google Sites, BlackBoard, Blogger, WordPress, just about any website that will allow you to edit HTML).

That’s it, you’ve now embedded a PowerPoint presentation into a web site.
